A city trip to Athens wouldn’t be complete without visiting the Temple of Olympian Zeus! This temple is a colossal ruined temple of Zeus that was once one of the largest temples in the ancient world. The temple was completed in the 2nd century AD and was used as a venue for musical and poetic contests, which were part of the Panathenaic Games.

The Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The Changing of the Guard happens every hour and is a very popular event to witness. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is located at the Syntagma Square in front of the Greek Parliament. It is guarded day and night by the Presidential Guard, also known as the Evzones.
The Evzones are chosen from the best of the best of the Greek Special Forces and they go through a very intensive training. They stand still for long periods of time, which is why they wear the traditional Greek dress, the fustanella. The fustanella has many pleats, which allows the Evzones to move their legs while standing still, preventing blood clots.

Helen Tsopouropoulou

The Evzones are also known for their excellent marching skills. They march very slowly and deliberately, with small steps and a high kick. This is to prevent them from getting tired and to look more impressive.
The Changing of the Guard is a very solemn and serious event. It is a sign of respect for the Unknown Soldier and all the soldiers who have died for their country. If you are in Athens, make sure to witness the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It is a truly amazing event.
